Photography

During the early 1990s I was fortunate to study with photographers George Krause and Carol Vuchetich. I was also helped by photographers Juan Garcia, Richard Washburn, and Tom Kilty (whose photograph is on the cover of my first book). I had a number of exhibits, the most important being at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts in 1998. It was a group exhibition focusing on several Houston neighborhoods. I had eleven photographs in the exhibit.

My first two books, Delirio, and Cemeteries contain a number of my photographs. Since 2010, I have been teaching a photo-ethnography course at the University of Houston.

Santo Niño de Atocha, Chama, New Mexico. 1992

The story goes that this diminutive statue was brought by early European settlers to what is now New Mexico. It was said to be miraculous - and was displayed for several centuries inside the small adobe church.
Sometime around the year 2000 it is reported that the statue was dropped and destroyed.
This photograph was taken in 1992 in one of my early trips to New Mexico.

Jerusalem 2009

With an invitation to present a paper at Hebrew University during Operation Cast Lead, I traveled to Jerusalem. My paper concerned the descendants of secret Jews in Mexico during the colonial period.

The Black Virgin

Dark Virgin I

Vierge Noir -
Rocamadour, France

The dark virgin of Rocamadour appeared, along with her scores of sisters, in the 12th century. She sits majestically on her throne, with the child at her knee. She is black and made of cedar. Some say her presence tells of a past with the Knights Templar - others say she signals that her followers practiced alchemy and still others say she is kin to Isis.
